Poker News - January 22nd, 2010 - Written By Bonnie
Barney Frank is one of the most recognized political faces in the gambling community. For years he has been urging government officials to readdress the legalization of gambling throughout the United States. Time and time again his efforts have been shot down, and it was not until this past year that we noticed other government officials standing behind Frank in an attempt to help our struggling economy. What most people against any form of gambling fail to notice is the benefits that can come from a government regulated legalization of gambling.
The Poker Players Alliance is an organization that Frank has worked hand in hand with to introduce The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act of 2009, or also known as H.R. 2267. The bill is expected to be up for a committee vote as early as next month.
Poppas, the executive director of the Poker Players Alliance stated, “We expect within a few short weeks, most likely in the month of February, there will be a committee vote on this legislation,” said Pappas. “This is a very critical and important for vote for the Poker Players Alliance, as well as the poker community, and we need everyone to step up and make sure that their voices are heard.”
HR 2267 would allow online poker to be legalized and regulated by the US Department of Treasury. In doing so, more than $42 billion could be raised over the next ten years. Not only will Americans be able to participate in online gambling without all the complications that come with doing so now, those funds will also help to pull this countries out of a financial crisis, which we have been facing for a number of years.
