Poker News - January 29th, 2010 - Written By Bonnie
It has been several years since we first heard the name of a up and coming poker star, Hoyt Corkins, who got his big break when winning his first World Poker Tour Tournament some 6 years ago at the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods. Wednesday night, he was back to it, sitting with the chip lead during the Southern Poker Championship. While Corkin has taken a real liking to the fame and fortune that comes along with being a professional poker play, it was another kind of reward Corkin was looking to score.
Before play was underway, Corkin told the WPT, "I want to get first or second because that will get me 4,000 WPT points and there's only three people in that club: Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey and Gus Hansen."
It was a head to head play off against Jonathan Kantor that resulted in Corkin being the last man standing, awarding him a payday of $739,486 and making him another player part of the elite group of World Poker Tour Champions. Corkin's comment made to the WPT shortly after his victory was, "To try and play with those guys and to be in the same company with those guys is a big thrill. The money is great, but the trophies and the achievements, that is a big thrill to me."
Since his first win at the World Poker Finals, he has racked up over $5 million in career winnings, $3.3 million of those winnings being accumulated through events won during the World Poker Tour. Over the past 7 years, Corkin has managed to grant himself a six figure payday for tournaments won on the professional circuit. Corkin is a name we will continue to hear a lot of for years to come both through USA Online Poker Tournaments and live WPT events. .
