Matt Serra and Frank Twigg will meet in a match up that will feature two solid contenders in the welterweight division. These veterans have two distinctly different styles and will put them to the test. Both fighters are on a losing streak, and will be looking to get back to the winners circle.
Trigg's biggest strength is his wrestling game. He is very solid on the ground and will look to get the fight there as quickly as possible. The 37 year-old MMA veteran has an overall record of 19-7, and is looking to get his 20th. Trigg knows that his opponent should not be taken lightly, but he was not afraid to throw in a pre-fight jab during an interview with ufc.com when asked of Serra.
"He’s a great fighter, a former champ that needs to be taken seriously. He has some of the best BJJ around and has learned how to use his boxing for a quick KO. He will try to finish me as quickly as he can so he can make a statement. When he does not get his own way he acts like a spoiled child, and as with all spoiled children, I will spank him early and often." Trigg remarked in an interview.
Trigg was on a winning streak prior to his last fight in September when he faced Josh Koscheck. Koscheck however dominated the fight from the opening bell, and knocked Trigg out in the first round. Following the embarrassing defeat, it was reported that Trigg had been cut by the UFC and would no longer fight. Apparently the organization changed their mind, and are prepared to let Trigg show what he can do at UFC 109.
On the other side of the ring, Serra has lost his last two fights. He was completely over-matched against Georges St. Pierre, and then lost in a unanimous decision to Matt Hughes in May of last year. He sports an overall MMA record of 16-6.
Serra is determined for redemption in the octagon, and has trained hard for the match up against Trigg.
"I think he’s a dangerous guy with a lot of experience," said Serra of Trigg. "He’s pretty aggressive, he’s tough on top, tries to push the pace and tries to break you, but I like that. On paper, it makes for a very exciting fight."
The UFC Betting Lines have installed Serra as the favorite to get back on top, according to Bodog Sportsbook. Currently, Serra has been established as a slight -155 favorite to defeat Trigg. Trigg assumes the underdog role, with odds at +125.
UFC 109 will be broadcast on pay-per-view on Saturday, February 6th. Call your local cable company for more details.
