Following Maryland's dramatic victory of Duke on Senior night, students rushed the court in celebration. Apparently they continued to celebrate well into the night, as 27 were arrested following the game.
Larry Johnson of the Prince George county policed stated that approximately 1,500 people stormed the main street by the Maryland campus, elated from the Terrapins 79-72 victory over the Blue Devils.
Footage revealed police trying to restore order to the rowdy crowd through the use of the riot task force and horseback.
Johnson disclosed that all who were arrested were students, with charges of civil disobedience to destruction of property.
Maryland snapped a seven game losing streak to the Blue Devils, and with the win tied Duke atop the ACC standing with a 12-3 conference record.
The terrapins were led by their three seniors, in Greivis Vasquez, Landon Milbourne, and Eric Hayes.
"You couldn't really ask for a better script than that," remarked Hayes in a post-game interview. "The ACC regular-season title was on the line; it was just a real special night."
Duke drops to 25-5 and may miss out on a No.1 seed in the NCAA tournament as a result.
"Playing a big-time game like this was good for both teams," said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. "Our guys were in a position to win the game. I'm proud of that.
"It was tough because it was a game where we played well. It wasn't a game when we played bad or played stupid. It wasn't like that. This wasn't a game where bad stuff happened."
With the game tied a 69 late in the second half, Maryland reeled off two baskets in a row, including when Vasquez penetrated the lane and put up a shot that went in with 37 seconds remaining.
"This is a dream come true," Vasquez stated.
The same cannot be said for the Blue Devil players.
"It comes down to a possession or two of theirs. They made a couple of their shots, we missed a couple of ours," remarked Duke guard Jon Scheyer in a post-game interview. "That's the way it goes."
The ACC tournament is set to begin in a few days and both Maryland and Duke can make a case for a high seed in the 2010 NCAA Basketball tournament. Currently, Bodog sportsbook favors Syracuse, Kansas and Kentucky to claim the national title, according to College Basketball Betting Lines.
