USA Poker WSOP 2011 WSOP 2011 WSOP Event 22 Pot Limit Omaha
Pot Limit Omaha is probably becoming the second most common form of poker, and the 22nd event is based on good old PLO. Though Texas Hold 'em and Seven Card Stud are both ahead of PLO, this style of play is easily one of the most enjoyable due to the variables involved. The first PLO Event last year also had a $1,500 buy-in and over 800 players came out to participate. Tex Barch won this event, with a $256,919 prize. Klinghammer Thibaut won second place and $158,698 for his efforts. This tournament should also achieve a fairly significant prize pool, especially considering the relatively low buy in on the ticket.
The 22nd event, the PLO event, will require a $1,500 buy-in. The event will kick off on June 13th. It is scheduled to last three days. All players who want to participate can already register, and the tournament's structure is already up. Expect some of the bigger PLO experts to be at this event, including Tom Dwan and Patrik Antonius. This event, considering the amount of professionals it usually attracts, should be one of the more exciting and entertaining.
Tournament Updates
(New Updates Posted Daily During Event)
Day 1 Update - A total of 117 Pot Limit Omaha players remain after the first day of play. After 1,071 entries, this 117 represents nearly 11% of the initial entrants. David "Devilfish" Ulliot ended up breaking the prizepool bubble, but he was not the only noteworthy elimination. Annette Obrestad, Phil Hellmuth, Jason Mercier, Eric Froehlich, and last year's champion of this event, Tex Barch, had all been sent to the rails. David Chiu, Michael Binger, Ari Engel and Nick Binger are all still surviving. The prizepool has been built to $1,445,850, and the big prize for the first place winner is $292,825. Chip counts range from 165,000 to 4,000, so eliminations are likely to come quick in the lower end of the spectrum. Everyone remaining will earn at least $4,048 for their efforts, so some serious cash can be won - especially for those who last through the end of the event.
Day 2 Update - Day 2 of event 22 brought the PLO tournament to only nine players. Juha Vilkki of Finland controls the highest chip stack, with 1,235,000 chips in his pie. Rafe Kibrit, Cody Munger, Elie Payan, Stephen Wolfe, Jeff Sarwer, Roland Israelashvili, David Sands and Emil Patel are his competitors. The final nine will have to power through up to ten levels of play in order to take down the bracelet. Having outlasted more than 1,000 other players, each of these contestants likely know what they are doing in this style of poker that is rapidly rising in popularity. This table full of relatively unknown players will finalize event 22 on the third day, provided the event does not drag out to a fourth day as many others have.
Day 3 Update - The 22nd event in the World Series of Poker has come to end. Elie Payan of France has earned his gold bracelet, and he has also taken $292,825 for his efforts. Payan started off in the middle of the field, and he came in late, but despite these shortcomings he managed to take down the win. He entered heads up against Rafe Kibrit. Kibrit had taken the chip lead away from Payan early on, but Kibrit's lead would not last. The two struggled through a final table of nine to make it to the end of the tournament. Stephen Wolfe was among their competition. The final hand came when Kibrit raised from the blind after Kayan limped from the button. Payan called, and a flop dropped 4h-3h-2c. Kibrit bet the pot, and Payan re-bet the pot to put Kibrit all-in. Kibrit flipped Ad-As-Qd-6c, while Payan held Qh-9h-8d-7c. The turn brought an ace, giving Kibrit trips, but the ace was a heart. The flush sealed Kibrit's fate, as the 10d on the river failed to help him improve.
