  • Winner: Maxim Lykov
  • Buy In: $1,000
  • Winner's Take: $648,880
  • Runner Up: Dror Michaelo

Event 54 is one of the largest the series is expecting, as this is a five day event. The tournament is expected to be so large that it is going to have two first days. Players will be faced with a small buy-in, which is why this tournament is expected to be as large as it is. As standard a No Limit Texas Hold 'em, players will be playing the most famous variant of poker in this game. We recommend this tournament over most other Texas Hold 'em events, as it is going to have a very large prize pool.

The first day of this event will kick off only July 2nd and July 3rd, with Day 1A and Day 1B. The tournament will begin at 12 noon on both days. It is expected to end on July 6th, considering there are two day 1's to deal with. A buy-in of only $1,000 is required to enter what will be one of the largest tournaments in the series.

Tournament Updates
(New Updates Posted Daily During Event)

Tournament Update #1 - Days 1A and 1B of the 54th No Limit Hold 'em tournament, the last before the main event are both on the books. On day 1A, 1,932 players came out, but only 275 players would remain going into the event. Tony Dunst, Antonio Esfandiari, Men Nguyen, Hoyt Corkins and Andy Black all came out to participate, but none of them made it into the next day. Matt Stout, Randy Lew, and Brandon Cantu did survive, however, and will make an appearance in the next day of play. On day 1B, a total of 2,644 players came out to participate. Liv Boeree, David Williams, Jonathan Duhamel and Michael Mizrachi have all come and gone. A total of 380 players will join the 275 survivors from day 1A, with Paul Volpe and Eric Afrait both alone in their six figure stacks. Volpe holds 124,500 and Afrait holds 100,200.

Tournament Update #2 - Almost 600 players were eliminated during the second day, and this has thinned a starting field of 4,576 down to 45 players. Very few notable names remain in the vent, partially due to eliminations but also due to the Poker Player's Championship that has been running concurrently. Max Lykov and Matt LaGarde are both still in the running, as is Eric Afriat. Stacks range from 799,000 to under 100,000, with blinds of 4000/8000 and an ante of 1,000. A minimum prize of $13,137 will go to the winner of the event, offering more than 13 times the initial entrance fee and more than enough to enter the Main Event, which is right around the corner.

Tournament Update #3 - Day 3 of the 54th event in the 2011 WSOP ended with a final table of 9 players coming back to work toward the bracelet. Five nations are represented at this table of nine, with only three U.S. players. The Russians Maxim Lykov and Stanislav Alekhin hold 1st and 8th place respectively, with Americans Dror Michaelo, Joshua Evans and Douglas Mackinnon holding 2nd, 3rd, and 5th place. The Canadians Sebastien Roy and Ren Ho Zhang hold 4th and 9th place, while Warren Woolridge of London holds 6th. Norway has a sole representative, Harald Olsen, in 7th place. All players but the 8th and 9th position have more than 1 million chips, so it is any one's game. With $648,880 on the line, these players are fighting hard for that first place prize. The blinds are going to be 20,000/40,000 with an ante of 5,000, so eliminations are set to come fast. The day may have started with 44 players, but only these nine remain in contention for one of the final hold 'em bracelets in the 2011 WSOP.

Tournament Update #4 - Maxim Lykov managed to hold his first place position at the end of the final day, earning his bracelet in the $1,000 hold 'em event. Lykov waded through 4,576 entrants in order to earn $648,880 in winnings. Had this been the main event, a 0 could have been tacked on the end of that. Considering the size of this $1,000 hold 'em tournament, it may as well have been the main event. Dror Michaelo took second place, winning $401,296. Warren Woolridge came in third, with Ren Ho Zhang in fourth. Haral Olsen took 5th place, making the top five in this tournament each from an individual nation. Each of these players now has more than enough to enter the 2011 Main Event, with a shot at continued glory, higher winnings, and perhaps the most coveted bracelet in the World Series of Poker.
