Past Winners of The Masters

Online Sportsbooks Sports Information The Masters Past Champions

Past Winners of the Masters are forever ingrained in golf history as champions of one of the greatest sport events in the world. The Masters Winners claim a major Championship, an automatic invite to the tournament for life, and the infamous Green Jacket. Players dream of having a chance to win this golf tournament and those who do, have achieved something special. The Past Masters Champions will be the first to say that winning at Augusta National was the best moment of their career.

Notable Masters Champions

Of all the Past Masters Winners, Jack Nicklaus has won the most Masters Tournaments. Throughout his illustrious career, Nicklaus carded six wins at Augusta National (63', 65', 66', 72', 75', and 86'.) His most notable victory came in 1986 when, at the 46, he became the oldest Major Champion in history. Nicklaus won 18 majors in his career, with his most coming from the Masters.

Arnold Palmer collected four Green Jackets during his career (58', 60', 62', 64). He never repeated as champion, but won each year after trying to defend his title. After his 1960 win at the Masters, he was elected Sports Illustrated "Sportsman of the Year." He had a decade long rivalry with Jack Nicklaus that captivated the golf-world. He was the first player to reach a career earnings level of $1 million. Today, he serves as an honorary starter each year at the Masters. Ben Hogan won the Masters Tournament two times in his career (51' and 53'). The nine-time major champion was widely known for his exceptional ball-striking. This allowed him to be so successful at Augusta National in the early 1950's. Nicklaus refers to Hogan as the best ball-striker he had ever seen, and that includes Tiger Woods amongst others.

Tiger Woods has won the Masters Tournament four times (97', 01', 02' 05'). In 1997 Woods set multiple Masters records, that include the lowest score in relation to par (18 under-par) and was the youngest player in history to win (21 years-old). Woods, Nicklaus, and Nick Faldo, are the only players to repeat as Champions of the Masters. He hit arguably the most famous shot of this generation on the 16th hole at Augusta National in 2005, when his chip shot from the back of the green went in the hole. Tiger went on to win that year in a playoff over Chris DiMarco.

Gene Sarazen won the 1935 Masters Tournament. He hit the "shot heard around the world" when he made a double-eagle on the par-five, fifteenth hole at Augusta National. He went on to win in a playoff over Craig Wood, earning the $1,500 first prize check. Gary Player was the first ever international player to win the Masters Tournament, when he claimed the green jacket in 1961. He would go on to win two more, for three total Masters championships (61', 74', 78',). The South African played in his final Masters tournament two years ago.

Phil Mickelson long had the label of "the best player never to win a major championship." That was until the 2004 Masters in which he made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 72nd to defeat Ernie Els by one-stroke. The epic victory cemented Phil Mickelson's history on the list of Past Masters Winners. Mickelson added another green jacket two years later in 2006.

Sam Snead is another legend, and past winner of the Masters Tournament. He captured his first Masters Championship in 1949, and followed up with another in 1952. Snead competed against Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson during his generation. The three were the first generation of super stars to bring golf to a new level of popularity. Snead served as an honorary Masters starter until his death in 2002. Nick Faldo is one of three players in history to win back-to-back Masters Tournaments (Woods, Nicklaus). He is one of the great past Masters Champions. Both of Faldo's victories in the Masters came in a playoff. In 1990 he defeated Raymond Floyd, and in 1991 he took down Scott Hoch. Nick Faldo will always be remembered as a great Masters champ.

Byron Nelson is another great past Masters Champion, winning in 1937 and again in 1942. His 1942 Masters victory came in an 18-hole playoff over Ben Hogan. He shot 69 to Hogan's 70.
