The Championships, Wimbledon, or more commonly just Wimbledon, is one of the oldest Tennis tournaments in the world. A certain amount of prestige has accompanied Wimbledon in its long running career and the winner of the 2009 Wimbledon Championship will be able to hold a part of history. Of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, Wimbledon is the only one to be held on grass courts. Many events make up the tournament with the final ordeal being the finals for men's singles.
Wimbledon takes place in late June and Early July and the 2009 Wimbledon tournament is no different with the start being on June 22. The events are comprised of five major events, four Juniors events, and four invitational events. The major events consist of Gentleman's and Ladies' singles, as well as doubles for the different sexes, followed by a mixed doubles series. The juniors events are the same as the major events, minus the mixed doubles. These are all single-elimination tournaments. The invitationals, to contrast the previous events, all a series of round robin events. There are eight pairs of doubles for the Gentlemen's invitational. The same applies to the Senior Gentlemen's and Ladies' invitational doubles. A wheelchair doubles invitational is the last event, reserved for males, and there are only four pairs in that final.
The 19 courts of 2009 Wimbledon are made solely of rye grass. The other Grand Slam courts are made from clay or are hard tops. The Centre Court and No. 1 Court are reserved for the biggest events in the tournament and is where the famous finals between Federrer and Nadal took place last year. These two courts are strictly used only for the Championships, but exceptions are made when the Olympics pass through - as they will in 2012. The Centre Court has also had a retractable roof installed to prevent rain outs from taking place.
2009 Wimbledon Championships Qualifying And Seeding The 2009 Wimbledon Championships Qualifying Tournament is what determines which players will participate and how seeding will take place. This is what effects the tennis betting so much depending on who the big players are matched up against. The report is usually released in the middle of June, to give players and fans time to decide what they will do. The games begin June 22nd, 2009 and run through til the 5th of July. Each event will start on their respective days, so the festivities should last a great deal of time. They rarely surpass the scheduled deadline, however.
Last Years Winners Of The Wimbledon Champiship Last year's Wimbledon winners were Rafael Nadal for Men's singles, and Venus Williams for Women's singles. Doubles winners were Daniel Nestor and Nedad Zimonjic. Serena and Venus Williams took the Women's doubles by storm. Bob Bryan and Samantha Stosur took the Mixed Doubles' victory. Many of the winners at these tournaments were USA players just like yourself.
