You will, I'm sure, be very pleased to hear that video poker rules are very straight forward and fairly self-explanatory. Of course, there are a number of different variations of video poker and these will affect the rules of that particular game. Here, we are going to look at the very basic rules of video poker as this is what it's most important to understand, and then each particular video poker variations should be investigated independently. Always remember though, that whilst the details change, the aim of all video poker games remain the same.

General Video Poker Rules

In general the rules of video poker at USA casinos are very straight forward. You, the player are dealt 5 cards when you hit the "draw" button. You have one round in which you are able to hold the cards that you wish to keep in your hand. You keep cards by hitting the "hold" button underneath the cards you wish to keep. Having held the cards you want you will hit the "draw" button again and the cards you wanted to discard will be replaced by new ones. This is your final hand and the machine will pay out according to what you have. The aim of the game is to get the highest ranking hand possible. In descending order, these are the poker hands that you are trying to form:

  1. Royal Flush
  2. Straight Flush
  3. 4 of a Kind
  4. Full House
  5. Flush
  6. Straight
  7. Three of a Kind
  8. 2 Pair

Hence the best hand you can possibly get is a Royal Flush whilst the lowest hand is usually a 2 pair although this can change depending on the variation you are playing.

Video Poker Rules: Doubling

Most video poker machines will offer players the choice of "doubling" on any winnings. Doubling means that once you have won you have the choice of either simply collecting your winnings, or trying to double them. If you chose to double, you will have one card dealt face up and four face down. You will choose one of the face-down cards and the aim for the player is to beat the value of the face up card. Should the card you choose not beat the face-up card, you loose everything, i.e. your original winnings. However should the cards be of the same value you end up with your original winnings in tact and the option to double again; and if your card beats the face-up card, your winnings are doubled, and you are also given the option to double again. Some casinos will give you the option of a half-double in their video poker rules; this follows exactly the same principles as the regular doubling, except that half-doubling only wagers half of your winnings.

Virtually all casinos for video poker will have some kind of limits to the amounts that they are prepared to let you double, however in general doubling is a great added fun element to the video poker games, giving you 2 games, and 2 thrills in one.

Cheating in video poker is not an option and players who follow the tips for playing video poker we have listed in our video poker casino reviews, should enjoy all their time spent with video poker games.
