Casino News - October 25th, 2009 - Written by Glen
A glitch in the software powering an ATM in a Pennsylvania casino has caused up to 40,000 transactions to fail. The cards were swiped, numbers were entered, withdrawals were processed - but no cash was returned.
The money had appeared to be deducted off of player's bank statements, but no money was paid out per card swipe. One particularly unlucky patron had swiped his card thrice, and each time received no money - though his account was debited.
In a brief Internet interview, Jon C. of Pittsburgh said, "Yeah I swiped my VISA. Three bloody times. Nothin' [sic] came from it. I left the gaming center, couldn't imagine why my bank was being debited when I wasn't even receiving cash." He went on to say that he is convinced a check will bounce now that his account has been debited without any money given back. He also mentioned that he was unaware of the problem, and figured he had not had the funds in his account, or perhaps his account had been temporarily frozen due to an irregular debit.
The company responsible for the ATMs, Global Cash Access, confirmed the malicious malady of misappropriated money, and is working around the clock to rectify the issue and return money to its rightful owners. The calamity was caused by an outage with the VISA network, and GCA claims that all customers should be contacting their respective banks to help speed up the healing process.
For now the problem has been solved and players are able to get their money, but the damage is far reaching in scope. The possibility of bounced checks or insufficient funds may still loom heavily on the shoulders of those who were impacted by the failed ATM. Perhaps residents of Pennsylvania will turn to Pennsylvania Online Casinos for their gaming due to this incident.
