Gambling News - July 3, 2009 - Written by Glen
Back in 1776, the British colonists decided that the abusive tyranny of the foreign sovereignty was too much. They would not stand for the oppression, and a band of the colonists decided enough was enough. Plans were set in motion and on July 4th, 1776, we declared our Independence and began to fight for our rights, civil liberties, and freedom.
Over two hundred years later, we have risen to the top. The United States has become an industrious, expansionist, and militaristic nation founded on freedom, equality, and economic safety. We have had rough patches through out our history, but we have always recovered and doubled back - which is what skyrocketed us to our current position.
We have Atlantic City, we have Las Vegas. We have Indian casinos, we have the occasional poker room and race tracks. In short, we have gambling. With the 1980's and the 1990's, we saw a new frontier, a new way to accomplish anything we would normally do on land. What we do not have is the right to do something over the Internet that we can legally do on land.
There are issues with the current state of online gambling, but these are issues that could be overcome. Unfortunately, all Internet gambling venues are international - and we can all agree that keeping money within our borders is a good idea - so regulation would allow us to bring it back into our own realm. Regulation would permit us to potentially boost our economy and add to our coffers.
Some of the elected representatives in our government have been working to add to our civil freedom and rights by amending our legislature to grant lawmakers, on a federal and state level, the ability to control how online gambling can function. The current administration has touched on online gambling, but pressing issues with the international community has prevented the executive branch from involving the branch with gambling issues.
So, it has fallen on the level of interest groups and Congress to push forward into expanded freedom. All over the nation gambling venues are becoming more common and more popular. With all the support to increase gambling, the online market should be under the microscope in the near future, and perhaps we will see some legislation to aid in our ability to play poker and casino gaming over the Internet for cash.
Regardless, remember what you are celebrating on the Fourth of July. America, the greatest nation in the world, ushered in a new way of life, creating an infant nation that would one day become a super power on the planet. We've overcome opposition, both within our borders and without, and we won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Love thy country, fellow residents, and Never forget - Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
