Proactive thinking has always been a solution for many problems, big and small. Ohio has been seeing plenty of big problems, ranging from some of the highest unemployment rates to reduced funding of colleges. With their budget in a flop, Ohio has turned to slot type gaming, and after months of debate, Governor Strickland has decided on an executive order to bring slot gaming to the state.
Executive orders are essentially laws that a member of the executive branch of government puts into effect, regardless of congress, that can be overturned by the Supreme Court. The executive order will add video slot machine eligibility to Ohio's horse racing tracks. These machines are hoped to add much needed funds to Ohio's public coffers, saving the budget from complete failure. If all goes well, the state will be able to increase the amount of subsidized finances the colleges and universities throughout the state will have available before billing students.
The idea is that, through gambling, education standards will increase, along with the number of residents with a higher education. This should, in turn, boost the educated workforce and bring jobs back to Ohio. While this will not be an immediate salvage and recovery for the state of Ohio, it should help in the long term. Ohio sits on a deficit of almost $2 billion dollars, and continues to plummet into deeper financial straits. With any luck, residents and the state alike will see great increases from gaming revenues.
