Gambling News - July 1, 2009 - Written by Glen
Since the Cold War, Russia has not had the most stable economy. Unemployment has been increasing, and At Midnight on Wednesday, another several hundred thousand people have been put out work by a recent decision from the Kremlin by shutting down casinos around the country.
Moscow was once the home of one of the largest gambling centers in the world, but due to laws passed, only four "zones" in the far reaches of Russia will be permitted to continue to hold casinos. Buildings have been shut down, gaming centers dismantled, and now Moscow residents will have to travel if they wish to proceed in their gambling ventures.
The backlash of this decision may run deep. There are some in the school of thought that Moscow will see huge declines in economic ability as people lose this form of entertainment or, in many cases, their jobs. On the other hand, this could free up money in the pocket of the citizen, enabling them to use this money somewhere more productive.
Steps have been taken to enact these laws, and indeed construction is beginning on the new locations to spring up casinos as fast as possible. Those in Moscow have begun attempting to utilize loopholes to bypass the butchery of their personal economies by the recent law. This consists of mislabeling games or changing their names all together to avoid any legal recourse.
Sad truth is, the Russians put out of work by this law could lead to further ruin for the former seat of the Soviet Union's economy.
