Corruption In Sports: Soccer Gambling Sting Shows Fixed Games

betting on soccerThe NFL hid behind possible corruption in sports when Delaware tried to legalize sports gambling, an NBA official had once been jailed in the aiding of of gambling scheme, and the NCAA is currently cracking down on student gambling. The real problem, however, seems to lie within the realm of soccer. German police have recently arrested seventeen people in more than fifty raids against the alleged fixers involved.

The Union of European Football Association, UEFA, has been supporting the investigation, which has been taken place since January. The rains, conducted in Germany, Switzerland, and Britain, netted $1.48 million in assets.

The alleged perpetrators had been accused of manipulating, fixing, bribing, or otherwise putting their hands and dollars into the game in order to clean up through sportsbooks, though it has yet to be announced whether they had been involved in USA Online Sportsbooks. Games in over nine countries had been tampered with through the manipulation of officials and players alike, and it was suggested that over 200 people were involved.

At this point in time, it has not been said that games above the second division had been fixed. Though this could be the largest fixed betting scandal that Europe has ever seen, the EUFA and authorities are pushing for maximum levels of prosecution against those involved.

It is suspected that the games took place in the Europa League and Champions League games.
