Ex-NBA Referee Involved In Gambling Scandal Released From Prison

Gambling News - November 7th, 2009 - Written by Glen

donaghyTom Donaghy, an NBA referee who had fallen from grace, was released from prison last Wednesday after serving thirteen months for his involvement in a scandalous gambling operation within the NBA.

In July of 2008, Donaghy was sentenced to prison for fifteen months for taking money from a professional gambler in exchange for inside information. The games that had been essentially purchased included games that Donaghy was overseeing.

Donaghy was rearrested in August after violating travel restrictions while living in a halfway house. He had also skipped work, thus causing U.S. Marshalls to re-arrest the former referee.

While imprisoned, Donaghy turned to the pen to tell his story, as well as a tale of other referees in the NBA who are or were allegedly engaged in similar operations. His book, "Blowing the Whistle," does not yet have a publisher, but reportedly chronicles the wagering between different officials, in-league favoritism, and other perpetration within the league.

The NBA has stated that they will review the allegations there in.

Donaghy's originally admitted to the crimes of conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce. Unfortunately, this is the type of activity that gives USA Online Sportsbooks a bad reputation. Fixing games and inside information remain heavily frowned upon by the leagues, as these morally unscrupulous activities damage the very fiber of the sports themselves.
