Illegal gambling busts have been on the rise over the last year, spread across multiple states. One of the most recent stings came in Galveston and Texas City, Texas. Thirty-eight were arrested, one of which was charged with a felony, during two similtaneous raids.
Esmaeil Moshtagh, 55, was arrested and charged with keeping a gambling place, promotion of gambling, posession of a gambling device, possession of a controlled substance, and communicating gambling information. His bond was set at $52,500 dollars.
The raids had been enacted by both Texas City and Galveston police, sherriff's office, the FBI and the DEA. Over $32,000 dollars cash was seized at the scene. Seventeen were arrested in Galveston, while Twenty-one were arrested in Texas City. In Texas City, two were charged with keeping a gambling place while the rest of the lot was charged with posession of gambling paraphenilia.
Sportsbetting was the operation in question, and it was presumed that players would be trying to collect on their college football wagers from the day previous. According to police spokesperson of Galveston, they had chosen the 11:00 bust due to the fact that players would probably be trying to collect on their wagers.
