For the purpose of maintaining efficiency and integrity, the state auditor of Ohio has issued a an order for the Ohio Lottery to enact a performance audit. In efforts to keep transparency with the state's lottery, this audit is to show the breakdown of gambling revenue brought in by the lotto. The Ohio Lottery has questioned the audit.
The Ohio Lottery's Executive Director, Kathleen Burke, issued a statement claiming that the audit "does not seem reasonable, necessary, or a wise investment of public funds." She continued by asking that the matter be "reconsidered." The statement was directed toward Ohio Auditor Mary Taylor. Taylor has not yet responded to their plea.
Due to the oncoming inception of casinos in the state of Ohio, misappropriated funds have become an ever present fear. According to the Associated Press, Auditor Taylor stated that an "environment of heightened risk" has been brought out due to the nature of gambling revenue and the legislation allowing the four soon to be erected casinos.
As with all forms of gambling, the direction of funds must be controlled for the continued integrity of the system. Lotteries, Ohio Online Gambling websites, and casinos all typically have very strict guidelines they must follow in order to continue operation. One transgression against these institutions could cause great upheaval, particularly amongst the trust of their patrons, operators, and users.
