Alabama Judge Rules Bingo Gambling Machines To be Illegal

Gambling News - October 28th, 2009 - Written by Glen

bingo machineOver the past several months, the Bingo issue in Alabama had been one of confusion, closure, seizures, and court hearings. The legality of bingo had come into question, and the question was finally answered by Circuit Judge Robert Vance. On Monday, Vance ruled that the bingo machines in operation in Walker County are illegal. Any location operating said machinery will be forced to shut them down.

The biggest question many are asking now is whether or not the ruling only applies to Walker County. Madison County saw a similar ruling in earlier months, but many are wondering if the recent judicial activism is binding throughout the entire state.

Jefferson County also saw a ruling against Bingo machines, stating, like Walker County's ruling, that the digital version of bingo is not covered by earlier constitutional amendments that made bingo, predominantly in a charitable setting, would remain legal.

In other counties, particularly Houston County, Bingo machines remain legal and regulated. Video Bingo, in Walker County, had reportedly generated $2 billion dollars in wagering on a yearly basis.

Paper Bingo remains legal in many of these areas, creating a social environment in which charities and players alike can enjoy themselves while bringing in additional cash when applicable. In compliance with the recent decision, the Walker County Sheriff's office is authorized to shut down all video Bingo operations within the area. For players who wish to find digital bingo in Alabama, their options have become limited - either travel to a different county, or turn to USA Online Gambling.
