Delaware Unlikely To See Appeal On Sports Gambling Scheme

Gambling News - October 1st, 2009 - Written by Glen

sports bettingIn just one sentence, the hope for an extensive, full blown sports betting scheme for Delaware lost the grip of the final straw it had grasped for. Governor Markell's administration announced that it will probably not argue an appeals court ruling that has denied Delaware's petition to have the trial brought back into court.

Judge Thomas M. Hardiman, one of the three judges that originally ruled in favor of the NFL and the other sports leagues, signed off on the denial. It was reported that eleven judges voted, and each one passed a vote of No. That being said, ninety days remain until the state can appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The original idea was to have single game betting on a large array of sports. Unfortunately, the courts smacked the idea down and now only parlay betting on the NFL, such as that found in the original 1976 version of Delaware's sports betting scheme, is available. The expected profits from this scheme is vastly lower than that as it would have been prior to the watering down of the gambling scheme.

Due to the failed experiment that is sports betting, Delaware has rekindled and redoubled their push toward having table games. As with many other states in the Union, table games are a last ditch effort for gambling to boost revenues. Multiple states, such as the neighboring Pennsylvania, have already begun to add the games, and now Delaware is surging to rush the table games as fast as possible.

Hope is still on the horizon for full blown sports betting, similar to that found in Las Vegas, but the odds are low and this may be one bet that gamblers would not want to take.
