The tumultuous state of gambling in Alabama may see a precedent set in court. This passing Tuesday, a judge ruled that the Madison County bingo fiasco will not apply to other bingo schemes around the state. While it was expressed that only Madison County will see impact from this ruling, it is possible that a precedent may be set for future court hearings.
A Bingo operation in Triana was shut down until a judge could rule on the issue, which went down on Monday. The judge ruled that the operation was closed due to a Madison County amendment surrounding the use of bingo as a charitable event. Governor Riley issued warnings to the affect that should the bingo halls ignore the judge's warning, then the bingo halls will be shut down and made defunct.
Talk is on the table adjusting the games to a point where they would be legal, but nothing has moved forward yet, nor has anything been solidified. On the same note, it was suggested that the games themselves, not the way in which they operate, is the cause for concern.
Should the matter remain unresolved and players unable to enjoy a simple game of chance, alternatives will have to be found. Surrounding states may end up seeing the Alabama gambling dollars, and even Internet gambling could see a cut of the money that may have otherwise gone to local businesses and charities around the state, particularly in Madison County.
