Gambling News - September 14th, 2009 - Written by Glen
While the United States rushes to increase the different options for land based gambling, the rest of the world decides on something slightly different. Through out September, several changes have been made in different jurisdictions around the world, each one to make steps toward legalizing online gambling. Unfortunately, the United States government will not catch on and legalize this highly profitable form of entertainment.
Canada's own British Columbia has a state operated online casino in the works. This is to be headed by the British Colombian Lottery Commission and will offer a host of different casino games. The proceeds will go directly into the coffers of the province and will aid in funding different services. Canada had previously taken a strict stance against online gambling, though a recent surge in online gambling has brought Bodog to the Canadian market.
Talk of legalizing online gambling has also been circulating around Ireland. While this is still a rumor, one in its infancy, it may be a possibility on the horizon. Neighboring Countries have been peering into the window that is regulated online gambling, and new legislation is constantly churning toward liberation.
On the other end of the world we have Argentina. Over the next few months, Argentina will be working toward legalizing, regulating, and taxing the prospect of online gambling. As with any nation that taxed online gambling, Argentina stands to boost their nationwide income by millions. It is rumored that online gambling will help fund the soccer broadcasts they have recently managed to acquire.
The European Union has recently allowed Portugal to operate a state-run gambling program if it will help prohibit certain criminal activity. This decision may allow the other nations within the Union to operate online gambling of their own. The fight is still underway, as the usual opponents to gambling claim that the moral implications may dominate the financial gains. Furthermore, in the heat of the summer, the European Union had actually filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization against the United State's online gambling restrictions. The WTO ruled in favor of the European Union.
The issue in the United States still takes a harsh stance against online gambling. In the last two months, several multi-million dollar seizures have attacked the online gambling industry, causing great strife. Legislation is in both the House and the Senate, though bigger issues have been keeping the plan from coming to fruition. All USA gamblers are urged to write or phone their congressperson, as this may help move the issue along.
