The Indiana lottery has reported a drop in profits by just over 17%. Out of the states that hold state lotteries, this was amongst one of the sharpest declines on a nationwide scale. The state's cut of the Hoosier lottery dropped from $217 million to $178 million between the fiscal year of 2008.
It was also stated that the higher priced lottery tickets have taken the sharpest blow, while players are shifting to the lower rung tickets to slake their thirst for lottery gaming. Many players are voicing their opinions, and it has been cited that the reason for less play stems from the fact that the jackpots have not been climbing as high as they once were. The largest hope for massive jackpots an Indiana lottery player has comes from the Powerball - a massive, multi-state lottery association.
Oregon and Arizona have also seen declines in their lottery sales, which has many government agencies relying on this money in a state of concern. Many states boast their donations from the lottery to education, but the fact of the matter is is that many lottery using states fund their education systems exclusively through lottery sales. Indiana is not one of these states.
Many reasons are liable for the lack of the lottery sales. Some cite the fact that Video Lottery terminals may be taking precedence, while others point at the casinos in the surrounding states. Regardless of the reason, many statewide programs are suffering due to the decrease in funds.
