Silence Over Anti-UIGEA Bill breaks, Four New Cosponsors Added

Gambling News - September 22nd, 2009 - Written by Glen

barney frankAccording to Library of Congress's Bill search, Barney Frank's Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act has recently received an additional four cosponsors to date. It had been months since new cosponsors had been added, but the Bill is up to 58 from 54 cosponsors.

As the months draw near where the UIGEA will be fully enforced, the momentum of the Bill gains strength. While Congress is occupied with bigger issues, the the Bill is still moving forward, even if at a slow pace. Fall will see the UIGEA under the scrutinizing eyes of Congress, despite pressing issues concerning warfare and health care.

Unfortunately for online gamblers, the United States government has recently been targeting online gambling by seizing bank accounts and locking accounts linked to online gambling. Online gambling has many threats to its safety other than the UIGEA, including archaic, outdated laws that had been put in place prior to the invention of the Internet, such as the Wire Act of 1961.

Other legislation has been introduced to aid the legalization and regulation of online gambling, particularly poker. The poker bill aims at legalizing poker, and fills in some of the grey areas surrounding the Frank Bill, while the Frank Bill helps to fill in the gaps in the I-Poker Bill, as it is colloquially called.

Many state's Representatives are on board, and you can help by prompting your representative to back the bill his or herself. The more support the Bill gains, the more likely it is to pass through the Democratically controlled Congress.
