With the health care reform driving politicians to invoking the ancient art of ad hominem, the government has been searching for new ways to increase general funding for the nation. One Senator, Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) has introduced the idea of using Barney Frank's Internet Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act (H.R. 2267) to help fund the health care reform. The money would primarily be used, he suggests, for low income subsidies, as provided by the America's Healthy Future Act of 2009. Through the use of this Bill, experts predict that over $62 billion dollars could be generated over the next decade.
"We applaud Senator Wyden's proposal to collect and put to good use tens of billions in Internet gambling revenue that would otherwise be lost in the underground marketplace," said Michael Waxman, spokesperson for the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative. "The Senate Finance Committee should approve the resolution, finally putting to an end a failed prohibition on Internet gambling that leaves Americans unprotected and unlicensed offshore operators as the only beneficiary in a thriving marketplace."
The Senate Finance Committee is expected to consider the proposal, and H.R. 2267 is currently cosponsored by 58 different Representatives. Under the Democrat controlled congress, the likelihood of the Bill passing is much higher than it was when Frank originally introduced the framework years ago.
The Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative launched an advertisement program recently to help with the legalization of these laws, and to toss out the tyrannical UIGEA. Players should be able to enjoy otherwise legal games without concern from the government, which is in need of the extra money to aid in the wild expenditures that the health care reform is inevitably going to cost.
We've said it before, but we're going to say it again - If you have not yet done so, please write your Congress members and push for the regulation of online gambling. There is no point in sending American dollars overseas when we can keep the money within our borders.
