NFL News - August 14th, 2009 - Written by Ryan Smith
The New Orleans Saints host the Cincinnati Bengals in their first preseason game of the 2009 NFL football season. The Saints did not finish the 2008 season as they hoped, with a record of 8-8, missing the playoffs with the worst record in the NFC south. The Cincinnati Bengals did not have a good season last year as well, Carson Palmer missed most of the season with an injury, and the Franchise did not keep wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh on the roster, allowing the Seattle Seahawks to sign him during free agency.
The Cincinnati fans look forward to seeing Carson Palmer back on the field in 2009, The Bengals football team will only go as far as Palmer's arm will take them. The Bengals did acquire a new receiver to replace the production of Houshmandzadeh, in New York Jets long time pass catcher Laveranues Coles. Coles will stand opposite of Chad Ochocinco, and Carson Palmer will have to solid receivers to throw the ball to once again. The Bengals will need to utilize these four preseason games in order to return to the success they had in 2005, when they won 11 football games.
Online sportsbooks, such as Bodog, have already released odds on this preseason football game between the Bengals and the Saints. The Saints are a -3 point favorite to win this game at home, but Drew Brees and the Saints original starters will likely not see the playing field to long in this game. Drew Brees played well last year, passing for more yards than any other quarterback in the league, and he should be in good form, after a short off season. The real test is for the Saints coaching staff, who must decide if Reggie Bush or Pierre Thomas will be the starting running back in the regular season. Reggie Bush has performed well for the Saints since they drafted him, but he can not carry the ball up the middle between the tackles, something Thomas showed he is capable of in 2008.
The Bengals are a +3 underdog in this game, and the over and under is set at 37 points in this game. Both of these offenses when 100% healthy, can score points at will, However since this game is a preseason game, the starting players should not see to much action. Preseason games are designed to help the younger players in the NFL, see playing time at the speed of the NFL. This should be an exciting game to watch tonight, and both of these teams play football with an offensive mentality. So expect to see plenty of touch down dances in this Friday Night preseason game. This game is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Friday Night.
