NFL News - August 13th, 2009 - Written by Ryan
Tony Dungy, the now retired ex-coach of the Indianapolis Colts, made a statement on an ESPN radio show this Tuesday that he thinks "something's gonna happen this week" with Mike Vick and his future in the NFL. Dungy's prediction may or may not come true, but the Vick situation is one that has been passed back and forth between different NFL teams. Vick was conditionally reinstated on July 27th, as per Commissioner Roger Goodell's lienency.
It is supposed that five teams are interested in Mike Vick now that his time has been served, but this is merely speculation - the actual number could be higher or lower. The Vick situation has caused much turmoil, and as it stands many teams are hesitant to add Vick due to the controversay surround his arrest, public relations, and the attitude from his future teammates.
Despite the clashing ideas behind the signing of Vick, Dungy is seemingly steadfast in the idea that Vick will find a team within the very near future. Dungy is reported to be a "personal mentor" for Vick, and it may be due to his influence that Vick manages to find a team. While Indianapolis may be a location Vick ends up, Dungy does not think that "he's [Vick] not a fit with that offense."
The former Atlanta Falcon quarterback put in 23 months in federal prison, a sentence which just recently ended. Vick's bankroll has dropped too low to manage, causing him to file chapter 11 bankruptcy. While his reinstatement is a step in the right direction for the fallen-from-grace quarterback, the difficulty in finding a team who is willin to work with his criminal history may be a new challenege all together. Reactions from fans, teammates, and sponsors are amongst the list of concerns that teams may feel when signing Vick, as his case was highly prolific and publicized.
The hopeful quarterback, backed by Tony Dungy, may find himself on a team within the week, as the ex-coach would suggest, though the tribulation could be far from over.
