NFL News - July 15, 2009 - Written by Glen
Brett Favre has been mulling over the idea of returning to the NFL to play for the Minnesota Vikings, and has finally announced that he is "running out of time" to make a decision. After 17 years of professional football, Brett Favre will have to decide whether or not he will be going for an 18th. After years of setting records, standards, and receiving awards, coupled with injuries and surgeries, Favre is going to have to make a decision whether or not he will continue. He has two weeks left.
The Associated Press had been following Favre's training with just weeks before the preseason's beginning. According to the AP, Favre has been testing his arm to see if his usual strength has made a return. After a minor surgery on his throwing arm, Favre decided to put forth the effort and continue training in order to ascertain whether or not he could return to 100%. He claimed that he would not want to return to the field if he "did not have it" nor did he believe "Minnesota would even consider it if he did not have it."
The surgery was meant to repair damaged tendons in his right bicep. While it was a success, it did not guarantee his return to the game. Favre has made it abundantly clear that he will not return to the field if he could not do so at peak performance. His recent showings have had him looking well, as his passing does not seem to have suffered much, as the Associated Press would put it. However, he expressed uncertainty in his own abilities. Assuming he feels capable, he will be returning. Otherwise, we can wave goodbye to Favre as he gives a dignified bow out.
The entire summer for Favre has been spent working out with the Oak Grove High School football team. His conditioning over the summer is what will determine his resurgance or retirement from professional football prior to the beginning of training camp on July 30th. At 39 years of age, Favre may be looking at the twilight of his career. After 17 years of walking onto the field, resplendant in his battlegear, this could be the end of a legend.
