NFL News - September 13th, 2009 - Written by John
Just like his one-year experiment with the Jets, Brett Favre is off to a good start in 2009.
In his first game as a Viking, the 39-year old did more than just turn around and hand the ball to Adrian Peterson, which was about all anyone thought he would need to do to make Minnesota competitive, and led his team to a 34-20 blowout over the Browns in Sunday's season opener.
Sure, Peterson was a star again, punching in a pair of one-yard scores in the first three quarters, then hitting a home run on the fourth. Breaking five tackles, Peterson weaved down the left sideline and dashed 64 yards to paydirt. It was the biggest chunk of his 180 yards on the day. But Favre was more than just serviceable, completing 66-percent of his pass for 110 yards and no interceptions. He had a 95.3 passer rating.
He led Minnesota on two scoring drives of 12 yards or more and Minnesota was an efficient 6 of 14 on third downs. Conversely, Cleveland was an anemic 3-for-12 on third down.
The Browns actually led for a large portion of the game. They scored first on a field goal by Phil Dawson. Following a Peterson touchdown run and field goal by the Vikings, Cleveland rebounded for a touchdown when Joshua Cribbs took a punt 67-yards to the house.
But Minnesota answered in a big way, scoring 24 unanswered points, including a 6-yard touchdown reception by rookie Percy Harvin, who had 155 total yards on the day.
