Sanchez Shines In Debut

NFL News - September 13th, 2009 - Written by John

sanchez jetsMark Sanchez announced himself to the league Sunday and the message was clear.

The kid is good and he's here to stay.

Sanchez, one of two rookies to start their team's opener, threw for 272 yards and a touchdown, carrying the Jets to a 24-7 win over Houston on the road.

In his first away game, Sanchez was cool and collected, moderating the offense with few hiccups. Three Jets had at least 60 yards receiving, all three with catches of 25 yards or more. He was aided by a refreshing ground performance by Thomas Jones, who's 20 carries netted 107 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown scamper.

Jones had two scores on the night and Leon Washington threw in another 60 yards.

Sanchez was not mistake free, however, he was picked off early in the fourth quarter and the play resulted in Houston's only touchdown of the game.

It didn't really matter. New York's defense kept any chance of a comeback as an illusion. David Harris, who was rumored to be involved in a possible trade for Denver's Brandon Marshall, was the game's leading tackler with 11 and also had a sack and a pass deflection.
