NFL News - September 27th, 2009 - Written by John
The Jacksonville Jaguars have quieted the critics for at least on more day. Houston may have only added some.
In a struggle to get back in the AFC South race, the Jaguars got their first win of the season, 31-24, over the Texans Sunday. Maurice Jones-Drew ran for 119 yards, his first 100-yard game of the season, and scored three times to lead his team. He scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the final quarter with an 8-yard scamper. It took the heat off of head coach Jack Del Rio, who BetUS has pegged as the second-favorite to be the first head coach fired.
The Texans had two golden opportunities to put the game into overtime, but blew them on silly mistakes. They had a touchdown on their second-to-last drive of the game that was reneged after Kevin Walter was flagged for offensive pass interference. On their final drive, Houston rebounded, driving the ball all the way down to the goal line. They went for the sensible choice, handing beefy Chris Brown the ball to plunge through the middle, but he was hit at the line, coughed up the ball and Jacksonville recovered.
Andre Johnson, on the heels of a near 200-yard receiving game last week, only had 86 Sunday on four catches and was never really a factor. It wasn't because of his quarterback. Matt Schaub had another good game through the air, just barely reaching 300 yards with three touchdowns.
