NFL News - October 5th, 2009 - Written by John
The Miami Dolphins came into Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills looking for their first win of the season. A smothering defense that forced three interceptions against Buffalo and a rushing attack that piled up 250 yards helped the Dolphins secure their first win as they defeated the Bills 38-10 on Sunday. Miami held Buffalo to just 206 yards on the day and just 46 yards rushing. Chad Henne, who replaced quarterback Chad Pennington, was making his first NFL start and got all the help he needed from running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams who combined for 200 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns.
"It's definitely a great feeling," Henne said. "Overall we did a wonderful job. Everybody deserves credit for this win."
After a scoreless first quarter, Miami began their scoring spree. Place kicker Dan Carpenter got the Dolphins on the board first with a 33 yard field goal and then Vontae Davis returned an interception by Bills quarterback Trent Edwards 23 yards to give the Dolphins a 10-0 lead. Buffalo would then respond with a 35 yard field goal by Rian Lindell. Brown then added a 1 yard touchdown run with 4:23 left in the second quarter to give the Dolphins a 17-3 lead going into the half.
Henne managed the Miami offense well all afternoon and finished with 115 yards and 1 touchdown, but more importantly, he did not turn the ball over. He hit Brian Hartline on a 5 yard pass to give the Dolphins a 24-3 lead midway through the third quarter. Williams would then add a 1 yard touchdown to put Miami ahead 31-3 and put their lead way out of reach for the Bills who could not get any offensive production against the Dolphins' defense. Edwards, who finished with 192 yards and 1 touchdown, finally found receiver Terrell Owens against the Dolphins. Owens did not catch a pass last week but had 3 on Sunday for 60 yards.
"We just have to go back to the drawing board," Owens said. "We're a couple of plays from being 3-1 or 4-0. We just have to execute as a team, and obviously we haven't done that."
The Bills (1-3) have not gotten any offensive production over the past two games and have been outscored 65-17 by their past two opponents. They will host the Cleveland Browns next Sunday and will have a great opportunity to revive their stagnant offense against a team that is 0-4. The Dolphins will host the New York Jets on Monday night.
