NFL News - October 5th, 2009 - Written by John
It appears the San Francisco 49ers aren't all that choked up about their last-second loss to the Vikings. A week after Brett Favre's hail mary with two seconds left was answered to give Minnesota a 27-24 win, the Niners were out for blood and hammered St. Louis, 35-0, on Sunday.
Vernon Davis had his third touchdown reception in three games and San Francisco scored in almost every way possible to pick up their third divisional win. They had three defensive touchdowns, two via fumble, and had by far their best defensive game of the year. They improved in nearly every category, sacking Kyle Boller five times, hitting him nine times and picking him off four times after only having one the entire season. It was also the first time since 1997 that the Niners scored a touchdown on offense, defense, and special teams.
"That's huge that every unit is pitching in," Hill said. "We're on top of the division. That's right where we need to be at the quarter mark."
Meanwhile, the Rams continued their NFL-long losing streaking, dropping to 0-for-their-last-14, and were shutout for the second time this season.
Scott McKillop started the romp, when a fumbled punt return was picked up in the end zone to make it 7-0.
That's where it stayed until the second half until Davis hauled in a 13-yard toss for his fifth score of the year. Then, Patrick Willis, who had been terrorizing Boller all day, picked off a pass on the ensuing drive and housed it from 23 yards away.
After a Josh Morgan touchdown reception, the Rams again coughed it right up again, botching an end-around at their own 11-yard line. With the ball rolling on the ground after a failed exchange, tackle Ray McDonald scooped it up and bumbled into the end zone untouched.
"Any day you look up and see a goose egg it's great," Willis said after the game. "We made a step today. People are going to say it's only St. Louis. That doesn't matter."
