Brown's Late Touchdown Run Lifts Miami Over New York 31-27

NFL News - October 12th, 2009 - Written by Scott

miami dolphinsAfter coming back from behind three times in the fourth quarter, the Miami Dolphins defeated the New York Jets with 6 seconds remaining 31-27 on a 2 yard run from running back Ronnie Brown. The Dolphins effectively used their wildcat offense throughout the game to stimulate long scoring drives. After starting the season 0-3, the Dolphins (2-3) are now back in the AFC race. With the Dolphins trailing 27-24 late in the fourth, they relied on their wildcat scheme to successfully lead them on a 70 yard scoring drive to give the Dolphins their second win of the season. The scoring play by Brown caught some of his teammates by surprise as they questioned the touchdown scoring play that was called.

"That's why we are players and not coaches," Miami defensive tackle Jason Ferguson said. "All of us were talking about, 'Why won't you pass it?' Because we got a touchdown, that's why."

Miami struck first in this game using their wildcat offense to drive the field and set up Brown's first touchdown of the night to give the Dolphins a 7-0 lead. Braylon Edwards, a receiver the Jets acquired early this week, scored his first touchdown of the year with 3:51 remaining in the opening period to even the score at 7. Miami responded with a 35 yard field goal from Dan Carpenter to give the Dolphins a 10-7 lead heading into the second half. The New York Jets would take the lead going into halftime, 13-10, on two field goals by Jay Freely.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Jets and Dolphins would see five lead changes in the fourth. Just 43 seconds into the final period, Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne, who finished with 241 yards and 2 touchdowns, would connect with Anthony Fasano on a 2 yard pass to give Miami back the lead 17-13. Exactly two minutes later, the Jets would respond with a 1 yard touchdown run from Thomas Jones to give the Jets back the lead. On the Dolphins next possession, Henne would connect with Ted Ginn Jr. for his second touchdown pass to put Miami back ahead 24-20. Jones would then answer back on his second touchdown of the night to put the Jets ahead 27-24 with just 5:12 remaining. The Dolphins would then eat up the clock on their 13 play drive that led to Brown's winning touchdown run.

The Jets noticed immediate improvement offensively with the addition of Edwards. Mark Sanchez, the Jets rookie quarterback, connected with Edwards 5 times for 64 yards and 1 touchdown. Sanchez played effectively in their losing effort and was 12 of 24 with 1 touchdown and no interceptions.

New York (3-2) will have to regroup quickly as they host Buffalo on Sunday. They have lost two straight after starting the season 3-0. Miami has their bye week and will host New Orleans in week 7.
