Jaguars Hold On In Overtime

NFL News - October 18th, 2009 - Written by John

jaguarsTorry Holt wanted to send a message to the St. Louis Rams that he was just as valuable to a team as he was years ago. It appears he made good on his wish, racking up 101 yards against the team that cut him after more than 10 years of service. It was his first 100-yard game this year and was plenty to give the Jacksonville Jaguars a 23-20 win over the Rams on Sunday.

Maurice Jones-Drew also saw his desires come to fruition. Earlier this week he vented to reporters about his frustrations with the offense, questioning the play-calling and calling himself a glorified "decoy". He was no decoy on Sunday, bowling through the Rams multiple levels for 133 yards and scored all three of his team's touchdowns. Josh Scobee kicked through the game-winner in extra time, a 36-yarder that was true all the way.

The Rams are now one of only three teams in the NFL still winless after the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Redskins. They are making strides of beating the Detroit Lions' losing streak of 20 games, currently riding a 16-game skid with the loss on Sunday. They nearly snapped that streak, though.

They actually led with over four minutes left when Leonard Little picked off a Kyle Boller pass and dashed 36 yards into the end zone to make it 17-13. But Jacksonville's David Garrard managed to lead the Jaguars down to the goal line with only a minute left and scored on a three-yard push by Jones-Drew to reclaim the lead. An ensuing field goal by the Rams with four seconds left pushed it into overtime.

Mike Sims-Walker led all receivers in yards a week after being suspended a game for missing room check in Seattle. He caught nine balls for 120 yards with a long of 35. He was the primary target for Garrard, who threw for 335 yards, but was intercepted twice. Boller had his best game for the Rams this season, throwing for 213 yards and a score, a 17-yard toss to Donnie Avery in the first quarter.
