Cincinnati running back Cedric Benson did not give his old team, the Chicago Bears, a warm greeting on Sunday. He rushed for a career high 189 yards as the Bengals routed the Bears 45-10. The Bengals' offense had 448 total yards and were also aided by Carson Palmer's 5 touchdown passes. Chicago managed just 279 total yards and quarterback Jay Cutler threw 3 interceptions in the defeat. Benson spent two troubled seasons with Chicago before he was let go and got his revenge on Sunday.
"Everybody knew it was going to be an emotional day," said Benson. "Everybody knew. What a wonderful day and a wonderful thing, to go out there and strut your stuff."
The first half was an absolute nightmare for the Chicago defense as the the Bengals scored on all of their five possessions in the opening half to open up a 31-0 lead. The lone score for the Bears in the first half came as time expired when Robbie Gould connected on a 22 yard field goal. Palmer, who finished with 233 yards, threw touchdown passes on their first four possessions, including one to Chad Ochocinco who had 103 yards receiving in the first half alone.
"I don't understand why it went this way today and why it didn't go that way last week or the week before that," said Ochocinco. "The offensive line played unbelievable. For Ced to run the way he did today and for us to be able to throw, we could have done what we wanted to do."
The Cincinnati Bengals (5-2) would get the only points of the third quarter on Ochocinco's second touchdown reception of the game from 13 yards out to extend the Bengals' lead to 38-3. Benson would score his only touchdown of the game in the opening minute of the fourth quarter on a 1 yard run that put Cincinnati ahead 45-3. Chicago would answer with their only touchdown of the game on a 5 yard pass from Culter to Devin Hester. They Bears have been shuffling their defensive personnel around this season and have not been able to find any consistency as they now are riding a two-game losing skid.
"That was pretty embarrassing," defensive end Alex Brown said. "It's embarrassing to come out and play like that. I tip my hat to their whole team. Cedric ran the ball like crazy. They did whatever they wanted to do."
Chicago (3-3) will have a good chance to redeem themselves next week as they host Cleveland. Cincinnati is heading into their bye week before they host Baltimore in two weeks.
