NFL News - November 2nd, 2009 - Written by Scott
As expected , Brett Favre came onto his old home field to a chorus of boos from Green Bay Packers fans. This did not affect his play on Sunday and for the second time in less than a month, he led the Minnesota Vikings past the team that did not want him anymore, 38-26. Favre picked apart the Packers' defense an threw for 244 yards and 4 touchdowns. The standout player for the Vikings was probably wide receiver Percy Harvin who had 84 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. He also returned 5 kicks for 175 yards. Favre, for the most part, eluded all the questions regarding his return to Lambeau Field throughout the week, but made his presence known to the fans who once supported him.
"Packer fans cheer for the Packers first," Favre said. "I know that. But I hope that everyone in the stadium watching tonight said, 'I sure hate those jokers on the other side, but he does play the way he's always played.' "
After Green Bay took a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a Mason Crosby 37 yard field goal, the Vikings reeled off 24 straight points. Running back Adrian Peterson scored from 1 yard out and Favre connected with Visanthe Shiancoe on a 12 yard touchdown pass to put the Vikings ahead 14-3. With 9 seconds left in the first half, Ryan Longwell connected on a 41 yard field goal to send the Vikings into halftime with a 17-3 lead.
Minnesota wasted no time at the beginning of the third quarter and Favre found Harvin for a 51 yard touchdown to give the Vikings a 21 point lead. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers would answer for the Packers and lead them to three straight scoring drives and only a 4 point Viking lead heading into the fourth quarter. Rodgers threw two touchdown passes and Crosby added another field goal to cut into the Packer's lead.
On the opening drive of the final quarter, Favre connected on his third touchdown pass to Jeff Dugan. Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings would rebound with a touchdown reception, but the two-point conversion failed and Green Bay trailed 31-26 with 10:26 left. Favre would then find Bernard Berrian on an 11 yard touchdown pass with 3:48 remaining and put the game out of reach for the Packers who could not perform a comeback victory.
Green Bay (4-3) is now seeing their playoff hopes fade away and are now two games behind Minnesota (7-1) in the NFC North. Minnesota came into the game favored by 2 according to NFL betting odds and had no problem covering in this one. The Vikings head into their bye week as they prepare for Detroit in Week 10. The Packers will play at Tampa Bay on Sunday.
