NFL News - July 1, 2009 - Written by Ryan
Jerome Stanley, the agent for both Wider Receiver Dennis Northcutt of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Safety Gerald Alexander of the Detroit Lions, confirms that a trade has been made. Sending third year player Gerald Alexander to the Jacksonville Jaguars for 10 year veteran Dennis Northcutt. Though this is not a high profile trade the NFL has become a custom to, both players look take make sudden impacts for their new teams.
Dennis Northcutt who spent his first 7 years with the Cleveland Browns and his last 2 years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, hopes the trade can revive his career. Playing along side highly talented receiver Calvin Johnson, Northcutt will have his opportunities at one on one match ups through out the season. Northcutt also adds a veteran 3rd down pass catcher to the team, a position needed, as rookie number one overall draft pick Matt Stafford will soon assume the starting quarterback position for the Detroit Lions. Northcutt had a sub par year last year snatching only 44 receptions, 545 yards and, just 2 touchdown passes. Numbers that can easily be improved with a strong effort in 2009.
Safety Gerald Alexander has only played one full season in the NFL, though he is entering his third year in the league . In 2007 Alexander played all 16 games for the Detroit Lions, a massing an impressive 81 tackles 2 sacks and 2 interceptions for a first year rookie starter. In 2008 Alexander played only one game in which he started, ending his season early with a neck injury at the beginning of the year. The Jaguars like Alexander and hope he can become a starter sooner rather then later. No starting position is confirmed for Alexander, he will have to fight for the strong safety spot against Sean Considine. Considine only gathered 30 tackles last year, a sign that Alexander will likely win the starting position.
