NFL News - November 24th, 2009 - Written by John
The comparisons will be obvious. The 2007 New England Patriots offense in respect to this year's New Orleans Saints are two of the most prolific units in modern NFL history. Both put up stupid numbers to begin the year undefeated, both were the hands-down class of the conference, and both had a mondo quarterback in the middle of his best year ever.
The New Orleans Saints are 220 points away from breaking New England's single-season scoring record, and will need to get past the current team for any shot at perfection. The Patriots were only the second team in NFL history to finish the regular season undefeated, and will try to keep New Orleans from joining them on Monday Night Football.
At 10-0, the Saints are currently 3 point favorites as found in the NFL Week 12 Betting Odds, with a total of 56. Odds on this game and other can be bet on at Bodog Sportsbook.
But make no mistake about it. The Saints have had it relatively easy to get to this point, playing opponents with a combined 38-63 record, including back-to-back games against the one-win St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The New England Patriots will be their first real test, coming off a big win against the New York Jets, which was their sixth in the past eight.
New England is 4-1 in it's last five games, covering the spread in each, but will likely have to score well about it's season average of 29 to keep pace. The Saints are averaging 36 1/2 points, have hit the over in 14 of the last 18 home games, and are 12-4-1 ATS in the last 17 overall.
Featuring two of the best quarterbacks, Tom Brady has a slight edge over Brees with 3,049 yards to 2,746. They both have over 20 touchdowns, though, and both boast a passer rating over 100.
But they will be working against two of the premier defenses this season that rank in the top-5 in interceptions, who have suddenly become turnover machines. The Saints lead the league with 20 picks, while the Patriots aren't far behind with 13. New England's Leigh Bodden owned Mark Sanchez last week with three interceptions, one of them for a touchdown, and is third in the NFL with five total.
The teams haven't played each other since splitting two games in 2005, but New England has won three of the last four, covering the NFL Betting Lines all three times.
