The Washington Redskins ceased to allow Jim Zorn guide their offense for the rest of the season. But they won't completely remove him from the control tower. Executive Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato announced on his radio show Friday that the team has no plans of firing the head coach at some point this season.
"Let me start by making a few things very perfectly clear," Cerrato said. "Jim Zorn is the head coach of the Washington Redskins and will for the rest of this season, and hopefully into the future."
It's the answer Washington players were waiting for after publicly asking management to give Zorn their stamp of approval. After a 2-4 start, it has been a dizzying year in which former Washington running back John Riggins belittled Zorn on YouTube, and personal friend Steve Largent told reporters that Zorn nearly quit last week, but decided against it. The team hasn't been good, losing to four previously winless teams, but haven't been able to focus on football with a battery of questions about the state of the union. Despite being forced to surrender play-calling to offensive assistant Mike Sherman, Cerrato also said that there is little to no friction between the team and management.
"The relationships internally within the organization quite frankly remain the same," Cerrato said.
Zorn is in his second year as head coach and has an expiring contract at the end of the year. He is 10-12 overall with the Redskins at the moment with a big division game agains the Philadelphia Eagles ahead. A loss will only make their ensuing bye week more chaotic when writers begin searching for ways to fill space and may render Cerrato's words moot.
Until then, with Zorn at the helm, the Washington Redskins are currently 5 point underdogs against the Philadelphia Eagles this week on Monday Night Football. The Redskins will not likely be favored in the NFL Betting Lines any time soon.
