Brandon Marshall May Jet to New York

NFL News - September 2nd, 2009 - Written by John

brandon marshallESPN identified the New York Jets as a team interested in acquiring Broncos' wide receiver Brandon Marshall Wednesday morning. Marshall was suspended by Denver last week for the remainder of the preseason after head coach Josh McDaniels said Marshall was conducting himself in a manner detrimental to the team, making a mockery of practice and paying little respect to coaches.

Although magnificent on the field, Marshall has been nothing short of a headache for the Broncos off of it. The wideout has been in the courtroom 13 times in the past two years. Marshall wants a new contract extension, but the Broncos seem unwilling to risk a long-term investment because they are unsure how much he will actually be on the field. He was suspended for one game last year by the team. In response, Marshall demanded that he be traded in June and the Broncos have been secretly active in obliging, ESPN said. The Jets, who are reported to have a strong interest in Marshall, have an unremarkable receiving corps and could certainly use his game-breaking ability--especially with a rookie quarterback looking for any way to make his job easier Marshall is due $2.19 this year, the final year of the contract he signed as a rookie.

The Broncos were also on the phones, attempting to make an addition to their team. With quarterback Kyle Orton out with a cut on his right index finger, and backup Chris Simms battling a high ankle sprain, the Broncs' were in the sweepstakes to sign recently released Kevin O' Connell. McDaniels was familiar with O'Connell when the Patriots took him in the third round of the 2008 draft. McDaniels was the offensive coordinator for New England when the pick was made. But the Broncos found themselves way down on the waiver claim after Cleveland, Detroit and the Jets also submitted a claim.

In the meantime, several surprises names hit the waiver wire Wednesday. Kansas City made waves, releasing wide receiver Amani Toomer (whom they had just signed August 5th), San Francisco let go of quarterback Damon Huard, meaning rookie Nate Davis will probably make the roster, and Baltimore also cut ties with a signal-caller, releasing Cleo Lemon.
