Rafael Nadal returned to the tennis court on Friday night in the Montreal Masters, after a 10 week lay off with a knee injury. Nadal Played Friday night against Juan Martin Del Porto, Del Portro proved to be to much for Nadal, as He beat him in two straight sets for a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win. On paper Nadal looked bad, but he actually played well for not having his legs under him yet, his unforced errors were not at an extreme high. The problem Nadal seemed to face early and often, was the speed at which he needed to play in order to keep up with the young Del Porto. Del Porto is riding momentum after he just beat Andy Roddick last Sunday, in the Washington, at the Legg Mason tennis classic.
Nadal seemed obviously disappointed with his efforts Friday night, and ESPN reports Nadal made these comments after the match "After two months out of competition it's tough to play at that level -- I needed to concentrate more than usual, The knees were very good. Nadal knows it will take time to recover from the knee surgeries, and He responded with these comments on the tournament "I have to be happy with the tournament. [Del Potro] is playing very well and I was at the same level as him in the first set. I thought if I could win the first set I could relax a little in the second and try again in the third, but it was tough."
Del Porto advanced to the semifinal match, in this match he will face Andy Roddick once again. Roddick and Del Porto met in the final round of the Legg Mason tennis classic in Washington last Sunday. Del Porto beat Roddick in that match, it was Roddick's first match since losing to Federer in Wimbledon.
Federer also returned to the Tennis court on Friday night at the Montreal Masters, Federer was side lined himself while his wife gave birth to twins. Federer failed to get pass the quarterfinals when he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsong with 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (3), and Federer did not play well at all. ESPN reports Federer had this to say after the match "It's obviously disappointing but you know, that's what Jo does -- he doesn't make a return for an hour and then he puts in a few and than all of a sudden he's back in the match," and later commented "I should never have allowed it but it happened, so it's a pity." he said "It's great to get some matches in ahead of Cincinnati [next week] and the U.S. Open, But my goal wasn't to just to play matches and do press conferences. The whole trip here was to do well and try to win the tournament." Tsong well advance e to the semifinal and play against the third seed Andy Murry.
The next scheduled tennis event that both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will play in is the US Open, it will take place August 31, 2009 in Cincinnati.
