Tom Watson came up just short last week of making golfing history when he lost in a playoff at the British Open Championships. After out playing the world's best golfers a week ago, Watson will return to face players his own age at this weekend's Senior British Open. Watson is a three time winner of the Senior British Open winning the tournament in 2003, 2005, and 2007. Amazingly if Watson can win again this weekend he will have won the championship every odd year since 2003. This weekend's championship will be held at Sunningdale, England.
In last weekends British Open Watson played amazing all week before falling apart late on Sunday. He was in the middle of the fairway on the 72nd hole and only needed to get a par to win the tournament. Watson hit his approach shot just off the green and left himself a putt under ten feet to win the tournament. All week long he had putted brilliantly but the pressure of the last putt was too much for him and he missed it terribly. Watson and Stewart Cink then went to a four hole playoff to decide the champion. His struggles on the 18th hole carried over to the playoff and Watson got beat handily giving Stewart Cink his first major victory. Had Watson made the putt on the 18th hole he would have become the oldest golfer to win a major championship by over 11 years. The 59 year old did become the oldest golfer to ever lead a major after three rounds. It was a special week for Watson as he nearly won his 6th British Open title. If he can come into this week's tournament taking the positives from his play last week then Watson will have a great chance to win. That being said, he will struggle to contend this week if he is still thinking about the missed putt.
The biggest challenge for Tom Watson this week will be the hottest player this year on the Champions Tour Bernhard Langer. Langer has won four tournaments this year and is easily the leading money winner on the Champions Tour with $1.5 million in earnings. The next closest money winner is Andy Bean who has only half of the winnings as Langer does. Watson has made a name for himself in his career as one of the top links golfers in the world. With 5 British Open titles and 3 Senior British Open titles, Watson has proven he indeed is a dominant links golfer. Golfing fans will be tuning in this week to see if Tom Watson can rebound from last week's disappointment to win the 2009 Senior British Open Championship.
