Kyle Busch Holds Off Mark Martin To Win Sharpie 500

Sports Betting News - August 23rd, 2009 - Written by Bruce

Bristol Motor Speedway has been known to play host to some very exciting races in the past. Saturday night's Sharpe 500 was no different, as it saw a great dual down the stretch between two of NASCAR's biggest stars. Pole winner Mark Martin seemed to have the most dominant car on Saturday, leading the race for 240 laps. It was Kyle Busch though who took the lead out of pit road late, holding off Martin to win an exciting four lap dash to the finish line. The victory gave Busch his fourth Sprint Cup title this season. Even though it was Martin who led for the most laps yesterday, Kyle Busch's 68 laps led were enough to see him cross the finish line first. The 50 year old Martin made his 1,000th career start at Bristol on Saturday, finishing the race in second place one car length behind Busch.

With his win on Saturday, Busch moved into 13th place in the Sprint Cup Standings. He is only 34 points behind 12th place Matt Kenseth, with only two races remaining until the start of the Chase. After last night's race, the 7th through 14th place drivers are only separated by 89 points. On the heels of his second place finish last night, Mark Martin moved up two spots into 10th place in the standings. He is still only 60 points ahead of Kyle Busch who sits in 13th place, one spot out of the Chase. Greg Biffle and Ryan Newman finished the race in 4th and 6th place respectively. This moved them both up two spots in the Sprint Cup Standings, with Newman currently in 7th place and Biffle right behind him in 8th place.

Sprint Cup points leader Tony Stewart, finished last night's Sharpie 500 eleven laps down in 33rd place. He still holds a comfortable 220 point lead over second place Jimmie Johnson in the standings. Johnson finished last night's race in 8th place, one spot ahead of Dale Earndardt. Jr. Kasey Khane dropped the furthest among the top 12 in the standings. Kayne finished the race in 28th place, which dropped him three spots in the standings to 11th place. Brian Vickers is currently in 14th place in the standings, but is in striking distance only 39 points behind 12th place Matt Kenseth. With only two races remaining until the Chase begins, there will be plenty at stake in next Sunday's Sprint Cup race in Atlanta.
