Sports Betting News - August 18th, 2009 - Written by Glen
In 1994, fans of the Rangers rejoiced - Captain Messier and his crew had taken a Stanley Cup for the first time in over fifty years. Ten years later he retired, and five years later he is named "special assistant to the General Manager." After expressing interest for such a position in 2007, Messiah was finally granted his wish to return to the Ranger's, even if he is off the ice.
Messier is considered a solid choice for coaching staff, as his experience on the ice as a captain helps to lend his leadership abilities to the team's current management team. His performance with the Rangers led to his number being retired, and his jersey now hangs above the rafters. Messier holds the second place position in total career goals scored, and his knowledge of the game only has room to grow now that he is going to have the opportunity to perceive from the sidelines.
With six Stanley Cup Championships under his belt, Messier is sure to be a fine addition to the coaching staff, regardless of the role he should play. It is suggested that Messier will be in line to take the Management position that is currently held by Glen Sather, though this is purely speculation.
The past four years have seen the Rangers in the playoffs. They have been to the quarter-finals twice and the semi-finals twice. Prior to this playoffs streak, the Rangers had not seen the playoffs in eight years, seven if the '04-'05 season in which there was a lockout is not considered in the equation. With a hint of luck, the arrival of Messier could put New York back in the running for the Stanley Cup, though the Capitals and Penguins may stop them in conference, and the Wings may be a tough opponent if both teams make it to the finals.
Messier holds an overall 1756 lifetime goals in the regular season, then another 236 in the playoffs. Messier holds second place to Wayne Gretzky for the most points scored in a career, though Messier had scored more actual goals.
