Sports Betting News - August 19th, 2009 - Written by Glen
Following the more prolific case involving Plaxico Burress, New York has another crime to contend with out of a professional athlete. The NHL's Blackhawks star Patrick Kane was indicted today on charges of misdemeanor assault and robbery, curtailed from the felony robbery charge that Kane and his cousin James were fit to face.
The cousins are to be arraigned on Thursday. The Kanes were arrested after an alleged altercation involving a 62 year old cab driver on August 9th. Both of the youths have pleaded not guilty to the charges they face.
The arrest was made because the cab driver alleged that the Kanes had assaulted him over a dispute over the fare of $13.80. Bruises from the alleged battering, as well as a broken pair of glasses, make up the bulk of the evidence against the cousins. The attack, had it actually happened, was said to have taken place after the driver, Jan Radecki, locked the two Kanes in the back of the cab.
Kane was reported to be open to a plea bargain, depending on the demands of the victim's desires.Kane has publicly apologized, claiming that he had been "at the wrong place at the wrong time."
Kane was the first of the draftees in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, and was proclaimed Rookie of the Year in the 2008 NHL season. In his first two years in the NHL, Kane scored 82 and 80 goal points, respectively. In the '07-'08 season, Kane scored 21 goals and the '08-'09 season saw 25 goals. Kane had also taken part in the World Championships, where he scored 3 goals. Kane is one of the front men for the Blackhawks, and an integral piece of the team's puzzle.
