Sports Betting News - August 12th, 2009 - Written by Jimmy
Tomorrow morning, at 7:15a, the first group will go off the tee, at the 2009 PGA Championship, in Chaksa, Minnesota. The start of the PGA Championship marks the end of golf's major championship season. As always, major championships always attract the best golfers, and this year is no exception. With players such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, and Jim Furyk, there is no shortage of talent in the field.
Hazeltine National Golf Club is the course these golfers will face. The last time a major championship was played at Hazeltine, was in 2002, an event which Rich Beem won. That event was also the PGA Championship, but the course has hosted several other majors, including the 1991 and 1970 U.S. Opens. In addition, Hazeltine is slated to host the 2016 Ryder Cup, which should be a testament to the quality of this course.
Over 100 of the World's best golfers are competing this year, and among those is the favorite, Tiger Woods. Coming into this PGA Championship, Woods is on fire after winning the Buick Championship and the WGC Bridgestone Open, in back to back weeks. With that kind of streak going, there is no way that Tiger Woods wouldn't be the favorite. In fact, the Las Vegas Oddsmakers have installed Woods at a 3 to 2 favorite, against the World's best competition. Those odds are unheard of in golf, considering the number of golfers in the field. Yet, Woods will battle on even ground, as he looks to claim his first major of the year.
Though Woods is the clear favorite, there are a host of great golfers not ready to just give Tiger the title. You have guys like Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington, and others all wanting this crown. The field also includes British Open Champion, Stewart Cink, who would love to win back to back major championships. The point being, there is a traffic jam of other golfers, waiting to get to the top.
At Bodog Sportsbook, they have a complete list of all the golfers, with odds, competing in the PGA Championship. There is where you will find Woods as the 3 to 2 favorite, and other contenders listed. After Woods, comes Mickelson at 20 to 1 odds along with Padraig Harrington, also at 20 to 1. Lee Westwood enters with 28 to 1 odds to win the PGA Championship. The next level of golfers are at 33 to 1, and they include Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen, Hunter Mahan, and Steve Stricker. After them, the group at 40 to 1 odds features Jim Furyk as well as Stewart Cink.
