The Washington Nationals, down to runs at the start of the 5th inning got a big hit from out fielder Josh Willingham late Monday night. With two outs and the score tied at 2 a piece Josh Willingham stepped to the plate for the Washington Nationals with the bases loaded. Smack, a 400 foot Grand Slam, Josh clears the bases with his 15th home run on the season and took Jeff Suppan the Brewers starting pitcher out of the game him self. The Grand slam ended a 6 run inning for the struggling Nationals team.
Willingham's night was far from over after his grand slam in the 5th inning. In the very next inning Josh Willingham stepped up to the plate with bases loaded yet again. With a new pitcher on the mound, Mark DiFelice, and only one out in the inning this time, Josh dug his cleats into the batters box and smacked another bases loaded grand slam over the left center wall. ESPN reports Willingham had this to say after the game "It's something that when I was coming up to the plate the second time I knew that I had a chance to do it." Josh did do it, becoming the 13th player in Major League Baseball history to hit two grand slams in the same game.
The last player to do it was Boston Red Sox Bill Mueller in 2003 and before Mueller it was another Boston Red Sox player, Nomar Garciaparra hit two grand slams in the same game in 1999. Willingham is not the player you would think to see hit two grand slams in a single game but besides Frank Robinson who hit two grand slams in 1970, none of the 13 players on the two grand slam list fit the description. Willingham finished the game against the Brewers with 8 RBI's and tied the franchise record in Washington. The 2009 baseball season has brought fans a Perfect game by Mark Buehrle just a week ago and now 2 grand slams in one game by Josh Willingham, an exciting year for baseball fans all over.
