After an exciting three man playoff, Loren Roberts emerged victorious making him the 2009 Senior British Open Champion. The win gives Roberts his second Senior British Open title and 4th major win on the Champions Tour. A 4th round 67 put Roberts into a three way tie with Fred Funk and Mark McNulty at -12. On the first playoff hole, the par 4 18th, all three hit good approaches giving them all birdie opportunities. After Fred Funk narrowly missed his putt, Roberts stepped up and made a tough left to right putt which forced McNulty to make his birdie putt to extend the match. McNulty answered by calmly sinking his putt which sent both him and Roberts to play the 18th again.
On the second playoff hole both players made a par which sent them to play the 18 for the third time. On the third hole of the playoff, Mark McNulty drove his ball well to the right landing in the deep rough costing him to drop a shot. Loren Roberts was in the middle of the fairway and hit his drive safely on the green about 20 feet from the hole. McNulty's approach left him over 60 feet for par which he could not make. Roberts only had to two putt for the victory and he did so easily making him the champion.
Greg Norman was the leader going into the 4th round but he did not play well on Sunday. A costly double bogey on the 17th hole en route to a one over par 71 left Norman in tie for 6th place at -9. Bernhard Langer shot five under 65s on both Saturday and Sunday and finished at -11 one shot back in fourth place. Loren Roberts was one shot back of the leader Greg Norman heading Sunday's final round. Roberts has been one of the best putters on tour throughout his career and he showed why this week putting the ball consistently well. Congratulations to Loren Roberts on winning the 2009 Senior British Open.
