What started out as one of the more memorable years in Tiger Woods' illustrious career has slowly become a nightmare.
The investigation into his single-car accident has begun to pick up steam on Monday. Tabloid TMZ reported that the Florida Highway Patrol is seeking a search warrant to further their investigation into the crash that left Woods bloodied and dazed over the weekend. TMZ reported that the state police want to view Woods' medical records from the hospital in which he was treated for the crash to decide if his injuries were consistent with a car crash or a domestic dispute.
The crash is still being looking into, but Woods and his wife, Elin, have canceled three-straight interviews, and released a vague statement asking for privacy. Police believe there is a possibility that the couple hasn't offered all of the information, and that the crash may have been the result of a crime.
What they do know is that Woods ran over a fire hydrant outside of his home, then plowed into a tree. The initial report said that Woods was traveling around 35 mph, but the vehicle's airbags didn't deploy. Woods said his wife then smashed the back of his SUV with a golf club to free him from the crash, and when police arrived he was in and out of consciousness in the road.
Woods replied on his website: "This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I'm human and I'm not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn't happen again."
He also added that the incident was "a private matter" and "the only person responsible for the accident is me", but didn't clear up any of the building questions regarding the circumstances of the crash.
The most curious part of his address was that "many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible."
What he was referring to was the tabloid news about a secret affair he has allegedly having with a New York club hostess, Rachel Uchitel. The National Enquirer first leaked the story, which has since been picked up by numerous publications, and became the first mar on his historically squeaky-clean image. He was allegedly with her when he won the Australian Masters, which was another high-point of a remarkable season in which he became the first athlete to top $1 billion in earnings, and won the FedEx Cup.
It is unclear at this point if the situation will effect the Golf Betting Odds listed on USA Online Sportsbooks.
