Sports Betting News - September 1st, 2009 - Written by John
The top four quarterbacks coming into the 2009 college football season are going to be fun to watch. Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame), Tim Tebow (Florida), Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), and Colt McCoy (Texas) all should put up fantastic numbers through the air this year. Based on the performances of each of these quarterbacks in 2008, it should stand true that it will be a tight race to see who throws for more yards and more touchdowns. Each quarterback's past history and situation are different so there is much to consider when looking at who might come out on top in these two categories.
Clausen, the lone junior in this group, comes into the season amidst great hype. Last season, he completed 268 of 440 pass attempts for 3,172 yards and 25 touchdowns. His numbers should increase in 2009. Clausen has an experienced offensive line returning and also one of the best receiving corps in the country. He has two years under his belt and will come into this year more poised and relaxed.
The Gators Tim Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, might have a steeper hill to climb if he is to improve upon last season's numbers. He has a whole new group of receivers and lost his playmaker Percy Harvin to the NFL. Last season Tebow completed 192-298 passes for 2,740 yards and 30 touchdowns. Tebow also will lose a little playing time to backup John Brantley head coach Urban Meyer has hinted.
Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, had outstanding numbers in 2008. He completed 328 of 483 passes for 4,720 yards and 50 touchdowns. He did lose a couple of key wide receivers and he will be protected by an whole new offensive line which might cause some bumps along the way. Despite these two setbacks, Bradford should see his stats skyrocket in 2009 as well.
2008 Heisman Trophy runner-up winner Colt McCoy is coming off an impressive season as well. He completed and incredible 77% of his passes last year. McCoy completed 332 of 433 pass attempts for 3,859 yards and 34 touchdowns. He does benefit in 2009 from having his entire offensive line returning and his top playmaker Jordan Shipley is back as well. Even though Texas is looking for a stronger running game in 2009, look for McCoy to put up big numbers this year.
Odds makers at Bodog have listed the odds for most passing yards and touchdown passes for these four quarterbacks. In the matchup for passing yards, they have Bradford at 1/1, Clausen at 3/1, McCoy at 2/1, and Tebow at 7/2. As for passing touchdowns, Bradford is listed at 20/23, Clausen at 3/1, McCoy at 2/1, and Tebow at 5/2. Fans can expect big numbers from each of these four quarterbacks in 2009.
